This past Saturday an anvil shooting competition was held in Farmington Missouri sponsored by The Discovery Channel and the show "Mythbusters".

An accident occurred and well known smith Tim Ryan was severely injured. He was air-lifted to the hospital and his condition is not known at this time. Several members of the film crew were injured too.

Begging your pardon, Sir, but such is not the case.

Persons trained and qualified in anvil shooting can and do aim their anvils. Both the top and bottom anvil are carefully chosen, inspected, and carefully positioned. The charge is carefully measured and laid.

Please do not let one reporter's account mislead your thinking. Such mishaps as this are rare.

No matter where you go... there you are.

I thought I heard the NWBA had a firing go awry at a shoot years ago. Shrapnel was formed and coulda killed people. Once I heard about it I took a kinder view of ABANA's position on it- they won't do it at their events, period.

They only remember you when you SCREW UP~!!!

The Anvil Shoot? A time honored tradition or dangerous stunt?........It can go either way. I've seen dozens go off with no problem, and a one that easily could have ended in death and dismemberment at the 1982 ABANA conference at De Pere, Wisconsin. It involved plenty of beer and some guys who ''knew'' what they were doing.......I'd rather abana ban that rather than the beer....[Image Can Not Be Found].............. My 2c

It was closer to his ass.....same diff....:twins:

I know from personal experience that cannon fuse doesn't burn without little offshoot sparks. If the fuse is too short and the little sparks get to the charge first it matters not to the dumb ass powder.............

Top 5 reasons why not to shoot an Anvil:

5. You live in a swamp, the anvil will go 100 ft up and 50 ft down.:(

4. Your neighbor is a BATFE agent.:ninja:

3. The dogs,kids and babies are sleeping.

2. The ''expert'' with the anvils and powder has fallen and he can't reach his beer. :help:

1. After selecting the most defective cast iron anvil you can at Harbor fright, the Politicians and lobbyists don't arrive to see the show.....:banghead:

Anvil shooting is no diffrent than any other "dangerous" activity... Almost always what hurts people is stupidity, ignorance Or intoxication....

And often a combination of more than one of those. :spin:

I know Tim Ryan and he is neither a fool, stupid, drunk nor careless. I think this is what is normally called an "accident"!

I meant no offense, simply letting my mouth take over my hands and use the keyboard without permission.

Sorry Marie, except for a bolt from the blue, I've never seen an accident that couldn't have been avoided. I would bet that if you talk to Tim he would say something like "If only I had..............." or "I knew I shouldn't................., but I've done it that way a hundred time".

I didn't mean to imply he was. I am not a a drunk, careless or an fool, however I have done plenty of stupid things carelessly without all the information I needed to keep myself safe. It's almost never "one thing" that hurts people in situations like this but rather a cascade of small events that when added up are catastrophic. I'm with Grant. I would place a large wager that if you talked to Tim he would know precisely what went wrong and how it could have been avoided, and most likely that he knew better. There are cases where it's "Gods hand" or what ever you want to call it. But they are very very rare. A accident is almost never by pure chance

That boat's got a booboo.

Ditto what Bruce said about cannon fuse. And besides throwing off sparks it is inconsistent in the speed at which it burns. A short 4" fuse like I saw in one of the videos might typically burn for 10-15 seconds. But I've seen them flash away in 2 seconds or take 30 seconds. With cannon fuse it's best to have some patience and use a longer fuse. Better still, use the small electronic igniters made for model rocketry.

Tom> Although my experience with cannon fuse isn't definitive, that which I've used is reasonably consistent at one inch per second. I ALWAYS check when we get a new batch and periodically retest fuse that has been in storage for extended periods.
