I'd been thinking that I needed a knife at Fort Vancouver that would fit the 1840's. So I figured I'm a blacksmith so I'll make one.

That is where I left off, pretty much at the end of that day. LOL I did forge 2 more blades the next day also. I'm in the process of cleaning the 7 blades up. I got carried away a little bit, heehee. Toss in a couple fire starting demo's with flint and steel and chatting with visitors and it was a productive day.

(Note the action photos are from Bob Wilcox who came in and was kind enough to bring me copies of the photograph's he took that day of me in the shop. They are very appreciated.)

So as of right now I've got 7 forged out and most of the way cleaned up. Still have a little bit of cleaning up to do but with my work schedule it's delayed. I'll post more pics as I go. Four are intended to be neck knives and three will be hunting knifes. each one I made a little different from the others as I went to see what felt right to do and learn as I go. So we'll see what they are like as I finish them. The metal used is 1095.

I'm keeping the very first forged knife ( the one cleaned up part way in the pics), lol all four neck knives already have homes as well as two of the hunting knives. They will be gifts (ok some are gifts to me from me, lol.) One of the hunting knives is destined for me mum who prefers a hunting knife in the kitchen but my grandfathers knife has walked off and no-one knows who took it. So I'm making her a new one.

Hope y'all enjoy them so far.

Rashelle

Pics are below I edited and put some in the right way. Note they are as forged with one partially cleaned up. Will put more up as they are cleaned up and finished. LOL one is sort of bumpy looking but I figured I'd grind that off cleaning that up as it was getting thin at the tip and edge and I didn't want it too thin.

Thank you. I've got a couple pics of them most of the way cleaned up but they are in a roommates camera phone so as soon as the other room mate gets the pics re-sized and into the puter I'll put them up also.

Figured out along the way that the post vise makes a quick way for me to correct any bends, straighten out, and ensure parallel sides all at once.

Got the pics, here goes see if I can do it right the first time this time.

oops forgot to add in this is the 7 mostly cleaned up.

Thank you Dave and Sam.

I've got 5 of the seven cleaned up and need to put in the holes for pins then harden, etc.

I was mostly planning on oak for the handles on the neck knives, as I have oak, lol and like working with it. Was thinking of brass bolsters and either oak again or something along the lines of purple heart (which I'll have to go get some) for the handles on the hunting knives. The neck knives I wasn't going to put bolsters on to keep the weight light.

I'm working on the knives at home as time permits with my work schedule and since it's a tiny apt, as the weather permits on the back porch, lol.
