Hi,

I have an outdoor forge under a metal shelter with a gravel floor.  I need to move my Jet jdp-17mf floor-mount drill press from its present location to the forge area.  Does anyone have any ideas how to set it up?

If I avoid pouring a slab, what do you recommend?

If I need to pour a slab, what dimensions are reasonable?

As a beginning Blacksmith, I make scale.

I love gravel/clay/dirt floors for forge work - if you drop stuff it doesn't roll, if you spill molten stuff it doesn't run or splash, if you mess up you can rake it over, and it's way easier on my arthritic ankle than concrete. The only downside is not being able to use rolling shop stuff like engine hoists.

I don't see why you would need a slab for a drill press though, unless it's really top-heavy and you need to keep it from tipping. If that's the case, I would would go 6" thick and not much greater than the dimensions of the base itself as any more is just waste. Imbed bolts in the concrete and bolt the press down.

BTW - my favorite drill press tip: get those cheap magnetic tool holders from Harbor Freight and attach them to the drill press.

I have a floor mount drill press lag-bolted to a solid-top pallet. The pallet is 48" x 32", with the long dimension arranged so I can stand on it in front of the drill.

No matter where you go... there you are.
