I am building my first propane forge, a venturi burner type, out of a piece of ten inch sch 40 pipe 11 inches long.  I got some superwool but I have not procured any coatings, or rigidizer for the blanket.  I have done some reading on this, but it seems there are many ways to go, and many different products, I assume they all have slightly different purposes in mind.

My question is; can any of you recommend a sequence of putting the wool in(two layers,1"), laying the kilnshelf floor in, and coating with a refractory mortar or castable product, and a place on the I-5 corridor from Longview to Everett where these products may be obtained?

I am heading up to Seattle tomorrow for a family event tuesday, and was hoping to get the last parts and pieces to complete these forges (I am making one for my son also), I looked up suppliers... Seattle pottery has ITC100 and Kastolite.  Would these products work?  Is it necessary to use rigidizer before the kastolite or itc100?

Is it necessary to fuse the two layers of superwool together with anything, or will the outer coating keep everything together?

Hi,  Bob

I am glad to hear you are building your new propane forge. Pottery supply will be a good resource for materials. Read the MSDS. You will find a sales person there to explain The comparability and use of the products you mention. I have built a few of these forges. When you get your materials rounded up give me a phone call any evening and we can discuss your plans. Phone #360 437 2922 . Good luck on your project and welcome to the NWBA.
