I thought I would share a picture of a new Hofi Hammer I forged for a customer. I had been having some difficulty in the past finding drifts and punches that stood up to forging S7. Thanks to a tip from Arnon Kartmarzov I used T1 HSS as my punch and an S7 drift and have had some good luck now forging S7. The T1 has enough tungsten that there is almost no distortion of the material and no galling. You do need to be careful not to quench after punching as the tool will crack.

I'm curios: how easy/difficult is the T1 to forge?

No matter where you go... there you are.

I am probably not the one to ask since this was my first experience. After doing reading on the critical temperature for the steel and the fact it was air hardening made the forging pretty straight forward. I heated the material to critical temp about 2100F and then forged. Pretty simple. Now what I will not know is whether this is correct. Technically T1 has a hold temperature for hardening. I would also use a regulator while grinding as always but this is particularly nasty stuff due to the tungsten. So far I am extremely happy. Today I punched 10 hammer eyes on the punch with a cycle time of a couple of minuets and the punch performed perfectly. When I have 500 holes punched then Ill know if I really really like the material.
