Seeing as you already have the propane, I'd say you already have the answer. Not sure where you're located, but in general propane will be easier to find. If you're in the PNW, join the NWBA, do your best to attend as many of the events you can and you'll meet many smiths with untold years of experience who are more than willing to share advice, instructions and hopefully you'll be able to make friends with one who has shop nearby. Most of them love to have a visitor and will help you with any questions. Just be aware, it may cost you having to swing a sledgehammer for a bit.
