I am looking for a new anvil. Mine had it's hardy hole broken off a long time before I got it. It worked for me for a while, but it has become increasingly more frustrating not having it. I can't afford to pay the prices I'm seeing on craigslist, which are almost 4 dollars a pound. Can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction?

There are nice anvils around for a lot less tan $4.00 a pound. I have a Peter Wright, around 150 pounds. I would sell it for $325. Needs a little work on one edge but is plumb usable as is. I'm down in Deadwood Oregon.Five hours from Tacoma

$300 is about the top of my price range. If there is anyone around who can help me out I'd really appreciate it. This may be unreasonable, but this is what I can do and I just want to be able to work.

If all you are looking for is a hardy hole why don't you buy or make a stake plate? There is a tutorial available here or I'm sure one of the guys on here has the ability to punch such a hole for a nominal fee.

If you're looking for an anvil you'll find you can get a new 12" x 12" x 3" plate of steel for around $150 (or less) and scrap steel for less still.

All sorts of great tools to be had and made 🙂 Just gotta use your imagination.

Best,
Jim

I have more anvils than I know what to do with. My mother used to be the office manager for a multinational cemetary company, and confided in a bookkeeper for a cemetary in canada that I was serving an apprenticeship in blacksmithing. For free, she shipped a near-perfect 225 pound hay budden to my mother for FREE! The only problem was that someone had broken off the heel at the hardy hole of this anvil. This Hay Budden languished on my shop floor for 31 years, until I told a very good friend of mine, and an excellent blacksmith, Jim Kieffer, about it.
He told me he though he could fix it. He proceeded to forge a new heel, out of wrought iron, and then forge welded a flat plate of high carbon steel atop the new heel. Then, using his tandem industrial-sized forges, he heated the body of the broken anvil, and the heel in the other fire, and then went on to forge weld both pieces together. The job came out PERFECT, that sucker rings like a bell, and looks like a brand new anvil, and now weighs around 250 pounds. I posted pictures of his job on the forum IFI.
Fixing your anvil is an option you might consider!

That's something I had not thought of. I don't have the capacity or skill to do it, is there anyone around Tacoma who does?

Thanks for the idea.
