I'm trying to find a source for 1045, 1050, or 4140 steel in 2.25" and 1.75" locally to run some hammer making sessions at scout camp. I've tried a few places without success. (Interwest doesn't carry it, Metal Supermarkets has to ship in in from the East coast at a high cost, Pacific at Port of Tacoma says they are not open to the public...)
I've dug through the archives here and seen mention of 4140 being used as toolbar stock for tractors, and to check tractor shops for it. Other than digging through the phone listings and calling random tractor repair places, any recommendations where to start there?
Any thoughts of where I can look next?
Thanks,
--Tracy

Since I was hoping to run a small class this weekend with my staff, I ordered some 4140 from http://industrialmetalsales.com/, but I'm still hoping to find a local source.

Have you spoken to Pacific Machinery and Tool Steel in Portland?

I don't know if that qualifies as "local" for you, but it looks like they might carry what you are looking for.
