Been watching the for sale ads for quite awhile hoping not to bug people but have not had any luck. Everything I find on CL is either to pricey or sales to fast to get to it.

Wondering if anyone can help me find a anvil? Just starting out and a 100lb range would be great. Doesn't have to be perfect just something to start on.

Also looking for a forge but can build my own. However if price is right I wouldn't pass it up. Then just misc tools and stuff.

Thank you everyone for any help

If you can make it to the Conference, there will be decent anvils in the tail-gating area, along with a plethora of tools. You can also get expert advice on forge building - or pick one up if the price is right. You can also get spectacular advice on beginner technique.

No matter where you go... there you are.

Thank you, I will certainly be at the conference in fact can't hardly wait. Not sure I can hold out that long buying some tools though but I am sure either way I will be buying there. I have been looking for tools since around December. Maybe I am to cheap or something. I see plenty of stuff for sale however seems like its over priced.

Just keep your eyes open, and you'll find something. Also, if you get a chance this summer to go the swap meet at Dave Lisch's place, that's another good place to find anvils, as well as many, many other useful tools.

What type of forge would you be looking for? Coal? Propane? Both can be simple to make, if you have the right materials, though I can't say buying a propane forge is always the best idea. . . A lot of the gas forges smiths like have been hand made rather than production. (For example, all the forges at the expo center are from scratch.)

Curious as to what you feel is too expensive.  It's been a while since I bought an anvil, but IIRC, you should expect to spend at least $2-2.50/lb (if not more for a smaller anvil, like what you're looking for), but I'm sure there's many folks with more accurate/current price predictions.

Honestly I am not sure what is to expensive. I've been told used anvils $1 to $2 a pound. Most everything I've found is $3 to even $6 a pound. The $3 range would be ok as only want a 100lb but they typically are in poor shape. I guess advice on what I should pay would be helpful? Maybe I'm thinking wrong on this.

I've pretty much gathered everything to build a coal forge. So I'm gonna save money there. Just need a anvil and some tools to get started

We're not just competing amongst ourselves to buy anvils. We're competing with "antique" collectors. We're also competing with sculptors/artists who will pay more than we might think prudent.

Shiny new ones of good quality run $8-$10. Make-shift (RR track, forklift tines, etc) might go $1/lb. For $2-$4 per pound I would expect to do a lot of refurbishing. $3-$5 would probably buy a user.

Don't just look at the anvils at the Conference. Talk with folk, let 'em know your budget and your needs. Old-fashioned social networking is superior to computerized social networking when it comes to shopping for anvils!

No matter where you go... there you are.

Bill Apple is who I think of first when I think used anvils...He usually has a fairly good selection at the Swap Meet.

Well thanks everyone for thoughts and advice. I was able to find a anvil. Paid $150 and its 96lbs on my scale. Painted so not able to find markings yet but will wire brush off the paint and start cleaning it up. Hardy hole is decent shape and face is pitted but fairly flat. Edges need work for sure.

Still looking for some basic tools if anyone can help. Hammers and tongs till I can start making my own would be great. I have most of the parts collected to put a forge together so gonna start on that this week.

Thanks

Wow, that's a deal for the anvil! Hope it works out for you.

As for the tools, just keep your eyes open, and see if friends have any small sledges they aren't using you can borrow. For tongs, if you're really hurting for them, some vice grips will work alright until you can make yourself a pair or two; buying them isn't always the best way to go.

There are some good deals on ebay for bunches of blacksmithing tools, including hammers, tongs, and files, so maybe you could take a peek there.
