An air cylinder is almost always a tie rod design. The tie rods hold end caps on each end of a tube that forms the cylinder walls for the piston. Each end cap has a port that carries air to the center of the cap. A hole in the cap then carries air from that port into the center of the chamber, aiming the air flow at the center of the piston. On the rod end the hole in the cap surrounds the rod on the inside. On the outside the bushing assembly and seals allow the rod to move through the cap.

May 12, 2008 a horrendous earthquake struck Sichuan Province in China. More than a hundred thousand people were killed and five million left homeless. A poet by the name of He Xiaozhu was in Chengdu, rocked by the quake. In the following days he penned this poem to commemorate the many thousands of children who died when their homes and their schools collapsed:

George Blackman commented on my first article that he'd had bad luck with a cylinder in a Kinyon design and asked if I'd recommend a good cylinder. I did a response, but George's question and my response were lost in the cosmic mud when Grant transferred us here from the initial trial site. This is as good an excuse as any to jot down a few thoughts about cylinders for utility hammers.

    Work in Progress

Artistic metal work for the house and garden

    All will revealed soon!

In a few weeks all this will be transformed into gates and railings for a beach front property near Falmouth. The materials used will be a combination of textured graphite coloured steel, forged and polished stainless steel and blown glass. The design will be based on pennants flying in the wind and various other nautical themes.
Note the gates are only half finished; they will have a row of much larger glass "buds" running across the top. These will be about 250mm tall !

When Grant Sarver invited me to be a columnist I was flattered and said yes, but now that the time has come to say something I'm wondering if I can say anything useful. If this works out, great. If it doesn't, well, nothing ventured nothing gained.

My area of interest is power hammers and that is what I'll be talking about when I create columns. Many of you are owners of hammers, some of them made by you. I can probably help you increase the performance of shop-made hammers. So if you direct questions to me I'll try to answer them.
