    Gitfly

This sculpture was created by Steve McGrew and Don Lightfoot in memory of Jim Fleming, who was a world-class researcher in the genetic and metabolic basis of aging. Jim used fruit flies as his research model. In his spare time he was a musician with his band, The Carcinogens. He played blues guitar powerfully and wrote a lot of songs.

    Punching with a Hydraulic Press

A while back I made some gates that involved a lot of punching, something like 30 off 80x12mm slots through 40x60mm bar... the hardway up. Given that I'm at that age where my body starts to creak (literally in the case of my knees) I always like to get horsepower to do as much work as possible for me. Hydraulic presses are great for this.

This article gives a few notes/ observations about using one to punch with. If your curious you can see the finished gates on this page of my site:

I didn't take many photos when doing the slots so I'll use some recent pictures of 30mm holes.

Flypresses, don't we just love them!

A few months back I met Grant over on IFI and was kinda flattered when he asked me to write a "column". Sorta think he was getting a bit mixed up with the North West and Blacksmith things. Me? I live in Manchester ..... North West England. I've got a few forges and power hammers but don't consider myself a blacksmith. Hey ho!

An air cylinder is almost always a tie rod design. The tie rods hold end caps on each end of a tube that forms the cylinder walls for the piston. Each end cap has a port that carries air to the center of the cap. A hole in the cap then carries air from that port into the center of the chamber, aiming the air flow at the center of the piston. On the rod end the hole in the cap surrounds the rod on the inside. On the outside the bushing assembly and seals allow the rod to move through the cap.

May 12, 2008 a horrendous earthquake struck Sichuan Province in China. More than a hundred thousand people were killed and five million left homeless. A poet by the name of He Xiaozhu was in Chengdu, rocked by the quake. In the following days he penned this poem to commemorate the many thousands of children who died when their homes and their schools collapsed:

    Grant,
I am amazed you were able to convert my ramblings into a working structure, my hats off to you. It is kind of you to call my words instrumental, thank you.
