    Brass fittings on burner question

    Hi,

    I am making a modified side-arm burner like that on Larry Zoeller's page. I got the schedule 80 black 1/8 inch pipe to put the tweco tip into, but the inner diameter is too big to tap.

    I found some brass adapters that have enough meat on them to tap: is there anything wrong with using brass on the gas injection part? Does it get hot enough to make any zinc outgassing an issue?

    Thanks for your time...

    The flowing gas will keep it cool. I use brass fittings on my burner. Note that I always remove my burner as soon as I shut off the gas so it doesn't act as a chimney while the forge cools.

    Brass etc, etc.

    Hey check out Steve H's micro forge burner in the forum under the forge fire. I built one of these burners and it is super tunable, from blast furnace to a whisper. It is the best burner I've ever seen. As far as brass or black pipe or galvanized, for a burner it doesn't really matter. Build one like Steve's and you don't need to worry 'bout any of that stuff.

    Thanks Lynn, but I am already well underway on building this thing. But, I may build it in the future. Thanks for the pointer!

    sch 40 or sch 80 ?

    [QUOTE=Jason brooks;11338]Hi,

    I have used 1/8" schedule 80 brass pipe and the I.D. is just right for tapping the
    1/4"-28 tpi thread for the mig tip. You may have a 1/8" sch 40 pipe. At any rate, you can silver solder a 1/4"-28 nut on the end of the pipe, then grind it to the pipe diameter.

    Hi,

    You might be right about me having a schedule 40 pipe. However, I tried all sorts of pipes labeled schedule 80 at ace hardware. All of them, brass, copper, galvanized, etc. had too big a diameter.

    It's no big deal anymore: I pretty much did exactly what you suggested. I took a 1/8 inch nipple, cut it in half, drilled an tapped it, then connected it to the pipe with silverbraize via a F-F brass adapter. I then chucked it into a drill press and filed it. There's a picture in my album here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...027.1001651572.

    Thanks for the reply!
