Connoisseurs John, connoisseurs is what we is

Sorry about pipping you to the post but I'm sure the boot's been on the other foot a few times without either of us knowing it.

Yeah that PW really is a beautiful thing, the more I look at it the more I appreciate it.... might even get round to using it someday.

I'm quite attracted to that double ender as well, I really like its almost symettrical lines. Any idea what make it is? there's not a scratch of a makers mark on it.

You still loving that induction heater? Just about every time I switch mine on I say a little WOW inside. So much so I'm half seriously thinking about looking into getting the 35kVA next year and have this one as backup.

  2. Im buying the anvils to sell on, so im pretty happy I diddnt get the 2 you did! - I was out of the running price wise well before the end on both of those auctions so someone else must have good taste aswell! if you get the itch for anything else on ebay let me know though and ill keep my hands in my pockets

I sold a 35kw heater to a local firm who do 'exotic' material bolt forging a couple of months ago (its the one with the seperate transformer) It will run a piece of 2" stainless upto white in the blink of an eye, infact you have to throttle it back most of the time. Very capable piece of kit.

    35KW induction forge

Decided to start this conversation because David Hyde and John N were talking about the in another thread. I have been using the 35KW for several years now and am thinking of moving up to the 45KW..........it never ends! More power Igor!

Hey John! Got by the "CE" requirement did you? Be careful with that "fast heat" especially on stainless. It is heating from the outside and with the poor conductivity of stainless you need to allow a goodly soak time to get the center hot.

I've got two 25kw units now with the idea they can be used in series and generate a 50kw field with out having to deal with the big power and cooling requirements of a big system... Might consider going that route as well David... If I remember Grant said you need something like a 50gal water system for the 35kw. Not very portable
Whatever you are, be a good one.

Yeah I guess another 25kVA would be one option. Thing is I don't really need another one ....but I've become so dependent on the one I've got that a backup becomes more and more desirable.

I'm not expecting problems with the one I've got but the more vital something becomes, the more important it is to think about backups ..... and to me in the 21st century that doesn't mean a coal forge, simply doesn't compare.

I like the idea of a bigger one because it means I could trade off the loss in coupling efficiency (bigger coils and irregular shaped work) with the more Amps I'm putting into the coil. I've now got two seperate workshops next door to each other. Each has a 415V 3 phase 60A per phase supply. Might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb. Now as for cooling .....

I use a 7.5KW rotary phase converter, would I be able to run an induction heater and if so how big?

Well, my first reaction was "you can run one up to 7.5KW". Then I realized, like "hey, wait a minute". "You don't need three-phase"! How much single-phase you got available? Like maybe 220 or 380 of 415V?

Should talk to John N. at Massey Hammers.......and induction.

I have "normal" 240volt AC single phase and also what we call over here "split phase", which is 2x 240v =480volt single phase that I run my welders off.
Just returned from 3 days at Manchester velodrome, I keep promising myself to make time to call in on John and make a nuisance of myself, maybe next time.

  10. David E - Kettles on if you ever want to pop in! I usually have a few toys to play with and love an excuse to escape the office for an hour or two!

Grant, I found a new supplier (via Ric Furrer) that has CE rated units, not got round to 'officially' selling them yet, just crazy busy on the industrial side of things. The demand is there for sure, I think they are a 'need', not a 'want' if you are trying to make money from a small metal forming business

David (H) - pop in for a brew and see my anvil 'mountain' - ive got a couple of tons of them now waiting for passports! im picking up a (hopefully) 600 lber tomorrow - 7" face width x 41" long !! the wallet is nearly empty but the heart is full - ill give you the details of the guys I got the 35kw unit from.

just cos its in my photobucket account, and ive mentioned anvils heres me with one last year.... (well, its the top half of an anvil, there is another 150 tons somwhere!)
