    Shear?

The new powerhammer/press is coming along, the idea of a shear for it is in mind. The forging press section is like Randy's, with a 7 " ram, has a 9" opening and 14" throw. It will have welded in slots for tooling, have been thinking a device for shearing stock would be handy.
At 57 ton, how thick of stock could be sheared? are replacement shear blades available from makers of such things? I notice some shear a number of shapes, as well as narrow flat bar,if I was close enough to a city to paruse one I would, just going off of pics from the web.
Suggestions? Point me to some other homebrew shear?
    Thanks, Russell

I would think that being a blacksmith that you could make your own shearing blades. I have to tell myself sometimes, like when I needed springs for the e-brake on my motorhome, which are not available, that I might be able to make them. I are a blacksmith. They worked great. ( Be better to purchase some, 'cause it took me 5 hours to make them! What did the springs cost??) Good idea to have a look at stuff that you might want to make... Helps me tremendously to have a picture in my mind.

A lot of it depends on what you want to shear... If your lopping off hot stock its a whole diffrent proposition than if you want to clean cut 16 ga strips.... I would think a simple sissor shear with some D2 blades would do most of what you want... kind of like an ironworker would have.. you could build a stand alone little unit and just drop it in the H part of your press when chopping stock.. I would guess 50 ton would cut 4-6" of 1/2" plate.... maybe a bit better than that depending on how good the blades where held and dressed
Whatever you are, be a good one.

I'm thinking of something like what comes in some ironworkers, shears various stock, flat bar, round and square stock, maybe angle. Like one of these that would fit in that opening.
I'm sure with some thought I can figure something out, hunting the web a bit for an ipl for one, give me something to rip off, er I mean emulate

I would give one of these guys a call:
    Federal Knife 1 800 235 6433,
    American Punch 1 800 243 1492.
They both have blades for most ironworkers and shears so should be able to tell you what styles are cheaper or easier to adapt to your use. Assuming you can talk to a good salesman.
