    any coal in Central OR

    Hello

Wondering if anybody has a bag of coal in Central Oregon I could buy to get started?

Also I am thinking about making a run up to Central Fuel in Chehalis to get a load. Any opinions on the coal they sell? Anybody interested in spliting a load or a portion of a load?

I called a few days ago and the price was 12 cents a Lb bulk.

    Thanks
    Mike in Redmond

Give Joe Elliott a call and see if he has any extra. Dry Canyon Forge in Redmond.

thanks buggyman I am still looking so if you would give me the number that would be great.

I did find a local group from the guy Grant recommended. Central Oregon Metal Smiths Guild meets the first Tues of each month at different shops in the area. January is at Dry Canyon Forge which is in Bend now. Hope to make some contacts and learn something there.

Are you still planning a trip to get coal? I would like to go in on some with you if thats still an option. After an afternoon of calling around the best I was able to find was $29 for a 50lb bag. Im located in Albany Or, or about two hours south of Portland. I'd be willing to meet you or whatever it would take. Anyways let me know.

if its good coal 29bucks for a 50lb bag really isnt that bad of a deal.
the coal in Chehalis is ok, but by all means not good blacksmth coal. It is an oiled stove coal, it is fairly high in sulfur. It makes a lot of clinker, and doesnt coke up like good coal. however that said, if that is all you can find/afford it will work.

    goodluck and happy hammering

John Turkington at Farriers Supply in Monroe Or. still sells excellent coal for around 25-27 dollars for a 50# bag. It is EXCELLENT coal!! Not a clinker in a carload as the saying goes.
That's about three hours from Redmond I believe. Call first. John is old and keeps sparse hours these days.

Hopefully someday I'll be able to get really good coal. Right now though it's a matter of getting less expensive coal or putting off starting blacksmithing. So hopefully I'll still be able to learn on poor coal. Well at least I'll get really good at fishing out clinker and swearing.
