    Survival knives for Christmas

Here is a pic of some survival knives I made for Christmas gifts. They were forged from OTS (old truck springs). Drew them out on the Little Giant 25; hand beveled; profiled; annealed; drilled; ground; hardened in oil about 140 degrees; oven tempered for 2 hours at 350; handled; pinned; sharpened. I didn't imagine the amount of time or work that these would take although I have made a number of knives. I used one to hack a trail from the river while I was steelhead fishing last week... Worked great as a machete.

Cool Lynn. Now I'm hungry for steelhead or salmon though.

Real nice, Lynn. I like the shape of the handles.

I'm curious about the brass eyes through the handles. Did you use some sort of flaring punch on those? Are they functioning both as a rivet and an eye? Neat detail in any case.

Don't leave home without it! A great design for survival, not quite a machete but small enough to shave with.....

Lynn those are really slick, great work. Hope the steel will hold up to the acid blood of the motherinlaw

The eyelets are just brass tubing... You can flare it a little with a punch, but have to be very careful 'cause as it flares you can split the handle... I know... been there. These have not been flared, just super glued in. You can put a leather thong thru the hole and have a loop round your wrist while chopping/hacking.
