Thread: Northwest Newbie

  1. Northwest Newbie

Hello from Bothell. I'm a prototype machinist of nearly 30 years, and decided to try a little heatin' and beatin'! I have a Majestic 2 burner gas set-up and some old rail track to get started till I find a nice anvil. I know metals pretty well but not when it's cherry red. I'm wondering if mild steel like 1018 or rebar would work for practice? I plan on making edged tools eventually and demascus but don't want to use good steel for the learning curve if I can help it. I have several books on order from amazon but value any trade knowledge I might gleen from fellow associates. Of course, I am looking for an anvil as all us newbies are, so if anyone is selling feel free to pitch me. Happy hammerin'!

Hey Frank-Welcome!!! I have a 154# Peter Wright in the "for sale" section for $350. Needs a little buildup to be pretty but you are in the area where at least two NWBA members do excellent anvil repair. I'm down in Deadwood Oregon and would take $300 if you came down for it.Yell if you're interested.... No pressure-anvils are better than money in the bank these days!! Actually- I guess anything is better than putting it in the bank these days isn't it???? take care, Eric
