April 2014 Mentoring Center Demonstration Handouts: Norfolk Door Pull with Mortise Latch

On April 26, 2014 Darryl Nelson and Dean Mook demonstrated at the NWBA Mentoring Center in Longview, WA. They forged a Norfolk style thumb latch, combined with a conventional mortise latch, instead of an open gate style latch. On the inside of the door there is also another Norfolk style handle with thumb lever. The latch box is a very smart, yet simple in concept system, turning vertical movement to horizontal. It involves some careful forging, including the seldom used process of forge brazing with copper wire, or very old pennies (once called penny welding). This is a very clever idea, and we are fortunate to have Darryl share it with us. This handout shows the steps involved, though it is not a substitute for being at the demo.NorfolkLatch_20140426HQ
