October 2014 Mentoring Center Demonstration: Jeff Holtby

Jeff Holtby Forging a Simple Padlock

On October 25th, 2014 Jeff Holtby demonstrated at the NWBA Mentoring Center. It was a great demo, with lots of tips for smithing that are not included in the handout. However, the handout is complete enough that if you follow the instructions you should be able to create a working lock.

April 2014 Mentoring Center Demonstration Handouts: Norfolk Door Pull with Mortise Latch

On April 26, 2014 Darryl Nelson and Dean Mook demonstrated at the NWBA Mentoring Center in Longview, WA. They forged a Norfolk style thumb latch, combined with a conventional mortise latch, instead of an open gate style latch. On the inside of the door there is also another Norfolk style handle with thumb lever. The latch box is a very smart, yet simple in concept system, turning vertical movement to horizontal. It involves some careful forging, including the seldom used process of forge brazing with copper wire, or very old pennies (once called penny welding). This is a very clever idea, and we are fortunate to have Darryl share it with us. This handout shows the steps involved, though it is not a substitute for being at the demo. Read More→

January 2014 Mentoring Center Darryl Nelson Demonstration Handout

Darryl Nelson: Forge Welding Using a Propane Forge

Darryl Nelson demonstrated at our first Mentoring Center event for 2014.  His demo included 3 projects, all involving forge welding using the propane forge. As usual, Darryl  made it look very easy, but he gave all the details of the process to make it easy for all of us. Here are the handouts that Darryl made for our use, with lots of pictures and the details of materials used. It remains a truism, ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’. Read More→
