Blacksmith and Metal Fabricator Wanted: Full-Time

12th Avenue Iron

A custom architectural metal shop in Seattle has an opening for a full-time experienced
blacksmith and metal fabricator. We design and build a broad range of artistic metalwork,
including custom gates, railings, sculptural projects, fireplace treatments, and furniture.

The crew member we seek has at least 3 years’ experience as a professional blacksmith,
working with a power hammer, and with hand tools. The position also requires welding,
fabrication, and metal finishing skills. Most everything we build is one-of-a-kind, and we
need a craftsperson that can tackle the challenges of building custom work, using
sophisticated old-school joinery and detailing. We’re looking for an individual with
strong personal drive, and the ability to work and think independently.

Qualifications:

  • Experience forging a variety of metals
  • Solid proficiency with all standard metal fabrication shop tools
  • Familiarity with various types of metal finishes
  • Portfolio/history of successfully completed projects
  • Professional attitude, appearance, and demeanor
  • Strong communication skills

Compensation package DOE.

Lane County Historical Society Seeking Local Bid for Ironwork

1901 Spanish American War Memorial

1901 Spanish American War Memorial

The Lane County Historical Society and Museum in Eugene, Oregon,  is seeking information on cost to reconstruct ironwork on a 1901 Spanish American War Memorial. The ironwork was removed around 1960 and the remaining portions of the fountain were donated to the museum a short time afterward. The ironwork is the first phase of what, will hopefully be, a full restoration of the fountain. The registrar, Heather Kliever, will use the bid information to seek out grants for the iron reconstruction work. An image of the fountain, with ironwork, may be found at the following web address http://lanecounty.pastperfect-online.com/33692cgi/mweb.exe?request=record;id=6F73878D-7DD9-4A41-AD25-419313567707;type=102

Thank you,

Alex Bealer Award 2013: Nominations Wanted

To All ABANA Affiliates:

NEEDED:  submissions for the 2014 award by the end of August 2013.

The Alex W. Bealer Award
History
Alex Bealer’s favorite tool was not a hammer but a froe, and when he had his fatal heart attack he was indeed using a froe to split shingles, one of his favorite pastimes.

Purpose
The purpose of the award is to honor the recipient for “service to the field of blacksmithing.” This covers a broad range and is not only service to ABANA, though that would not be discouraged by any means, but serves to keep Alex Bealer’s name alive in the blacksmithing world. The award is given when the ABANA Board of Directors deems it appropriate and the Board follows the committee’s recommendations of awarding it once a year although the Board could present the award more or less often. The Alex Bealer Award is the most significant and prestigious award given by ABANA. Read More→
