I have a pair of box tongs for 1 X 1/2 flat bar. They also grip 3/8 thick stock. I made the adapter shown. With the adapter they will grip 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick stock. The top jaw of my tongs is tapered. This prevents the adapter from sliding too far back. The spot weld the arrow points to in the last photo can be used to keep the adapter from sliding back in tongs that do not have a tapered top jaw.
The third photo shows the adapter sitting on the top jaw. The 4th photo shows the adapter pushed back and "locked" in place by the arm.
