Showing and telling - these are a few things I made.

The bronze/steel patterns were made by taking the thin springs from the inside of tape measures and slap bracelets, hammering them around a mandrel with a ball-peen (to get them nice and irregular) and then either dipping them in bronze or using a torch to braze the bronze over them. It's a very wasteful process but I really like the way the patterns work.

The knife has issues, but it was my first successful use of pattern welding techniques (2-pound hammer on a 110-pound anvil, Borax as flux, 1095 and 15N20 steels.

The gongs are made from old oxygen bottles and there are leather-covered strikers on chains bolted to the frame (the rope on the frame was meant as a temporary holding measure while it was moved into place, but I decided I liked it so I left it). The gongs were actually tuned ... slowly. A friend who is a musician volunteered to judge the tone, while I adjusted it with angle grinders, torches and lots of cussing. It was a very slow process, especially since my friend had to leave while I did all the noisy stuff so as to not risk her pro-quality ears and her livelihood.

Very nicely done. I particularly like the second ring there.

What sort of issues does the knife have, like tweaks in the blade or something?

Thanks! That second ring is my favorite too; I still wear it and have made several similar versions (I can't make exact copies, as the patterns are random, but I can duplicate the technique a lot). For a year or so, I would make one as a warm-up before working on other projects.

The blade is way bigger than the tang, which I frankly wasn't thinking about when I was forging it. When I put it in the first set of grips, the tang basically stopped around the 2/3 part of my palm. I am afraid that it doesn't have enough support. I have been thinking of either grinding off some blade to give the tang more support, or welding on a tang extension, but neither of those options really appeals to me.

I also made the holes too large in relation to the thickness of the tang. It lost a lot of strength that way.

You don't even necessarily need to have the tang go all the way through: just secure it with some pins or epoxy.

Do you think I would need to re-enforce the hand grips then? Or would simple hardwood be strong enough to not lever it out into my hand?

Every handle I have ever made was one-piece metal; so I'm a bit out of my depth when it comes to knife handles. All the knives I have ever had were full-tang things; even my kitchen butterknives.

I made a fillet knife and had the tang into the handle about two inches, held in with epoxy, and it stays in there pretty well. I've seen some very nice looking knives just held in by epoxy, but I feel that a pin would definitely help stabilize it. If you're worried about it falling out of the handle, even with good epoxy, then a pin won't hurt to have put in.

I don't think reinforcement would be necessary, especially since the knife doesn't look like it'll be sustaining much in the way of impact like a machete or Bowie.

Thanks for the advice! I'll give the epoxy a shot, and put pins through those holes just in case. I use bronze brazing rods for pins most of the time, since they are readily available and pretty easy to work cold.

Those'll work great, I'm sure. It'll be cool to see it when it's done.

I'll post pics, and if I can remember to, I'll bring it to the next open forge day.

Dave, the only way for the knife to lever out of the handle is if one exceeds the the shear stress of the pins plus the shear stress of the epoxy. I advise against using the blade as a piton while cliff climbing. Short of that, you'll have a perfectly usable tool.

No matter where you go... there you are.

I like that second ring also. I've done a little bit of forging bronze and really enjoy bronze. The pattern on the knife is cool. I haven't made anything pattern welded but do like the looks of pattern welds and mokume gane.

I tried my hand at putting a handle on the knife. I ... I am not gifted when it comes to woodwork.

I also whipped out a couple belt buckles at the same time (and made, then broke, some scrolling tongs).

You've gotta start somewhere; don't get discouraged.

Those belt buckles look pretty nice.
