Hey all: Thanks to the NWBA's Al Bart grant deal, I was able to attend Darryl's garden gate class... Found Darryl to be a great guy; skilled blacksmith; and great teacher... He told me that no one applies for the Al Bart grants... Don't know why??? Got me 300 bucks off the price of the class. :bounce::bounce::bounce: Here are some pic's...

Guilty~! Been needing to 'do' Darryl's animal head class for too long. ' Lyf so short, the craft so long to learn'~

They only remember you when you SCREW UP~!!!

I got to use an Al Bart grant, my only regret being that you only get one. You are right that not many apply for it, which makes it easy to get for those that do. Congrats on your class and for bragging on it. Maybe some others will get up the gumption to go for the grant.

Someone posted in the forum that only one grant is available per person. The gran'ts program was resently reviewed, and the guildlines include the following... One grant per person per year, and one grant person per class. If you have any concerns or questions about the grant's program, please contact Bruce Crittenden or any board member.

Lynn, thanks for commenting on your class at Meridian Forge. Thanks for supporting the Al Bart Grants Program. The NWBA is fortunate to have a facility like Meridian Forge, and a smith like Darryll who is so willing and helpfull with passing on this craft. The pictures of you and your project are a great example of how we all benefit and gain new skills from this program . Many thanks.

Hey Lynn,
It would be great for the Hot Iron News if you could write up an article about the class and add some pictures of your work. This is just an encouraging request from the editor, not a requirement. I want to stimulate interest about the grant among the NWBA membership, it is a great opportunity for people to take advantage of.

Hi Amy: I'd be happy to write and article about the class... I don't have many pic's of the work I made... I mostly shot photos of tools I have not seen or used before, or some shots of other artwork in the archives and work in Darryl's shop... Great experience though... I learned much more than how to make a gate... I learned more about punching holes; forges; using a chisel; collaring; and general forging. I'll see what I can come up with for the article and pm you with it... I would not have been affording this class without the Al Bart grant... $475 for the class, plus 480 miles driving; plus living there.... I took a canopy and camped at Darryl's place...
I'll see what I can come up with. If you prefer email, let me know, otherwise, I'll pm you.

All the best,

Lynn

Nice job on a great design. I wonder how many designs have been used in this class. I've seen one other that was equally impressive, but may have used more diverse joinery. I'm really interested where they come from. Inspiring for me, got to be a great experience for you, Lynn.

I'd say that was money well spent! Not bad Bucko, is the design yours as well?

Thanks, Bruce: The design is Darryl's... The only part I changed was the center bar and the size of the C scrolls... Here is a pic of his original design...
[Image Can Not Be Found] Darryl said the center bar in his design might take most of a day to build... Keep in mind all hand forging...I'd already been forging for 2 long days... So I went with something more simple...
[Image Can Not Be Found] I am planning to put a single flower, maybe a couple of small leaves, maybe a wrap or two in the center hole...
[Image Can Not Be Found] Something like this...
