Just finished a homemade swage block welded from scrap steel based on the plans here. It weighs 26 lbs. and even has a spoon form. It works well, but was a major pain in the rear to make. While it was much cheaper than purchasing a ready made block, the cost of welding it together ( I ended up with a few pounds of welds alone) puts it up there. I would not recommend this unless you really, really like welding and then grinding everything flush.IMG_2537.JPGImage Enlarger

Whew!,  Looks like a lot of grinding and welding.  I fab'ed my first anvil cause I couldn't find one.  165 # of forklift fork pieces and some mild steel, and about a roll or two of welding wire, and lots of grinding.  Did I say lots of grinding.  Heat treated with weed burners.  Then found a good anvil shortly after.  Moral:  Be patient, place adds in paper, on Craigs List, or go where the blacksmiths are.  Or if you have lots of time make one.  Good job WWII guy!

Cool. It's nice to have access to a swage block. At least to me it is. I enjoy making my own tools but you've got me beat on that one.

Wow, very nice. I really enjoy welding, but I don't know if I would end up making one of these myself.

Just having some fun messing around with whatever I have a mind to do.

Martin, it was a LOT of grinding, as I didn't plan as much as I should have, and had almost 1/2" of steel to grind off in some spots. I had looked for a swage block for a while, but had not seen one, so I decided to make my own. Plus I made it as a metals shop project so I didn't have to pay for welding wire or electricity.
