A young kid whos dad has a shop in my complex wanted to make a spike hawk... I tried to talk him out of it but he really wanted to use a railroad spike... They dont make for much of a hawk because its tough to spread the cheek enough you get good handle purchase... So I had the idea to forge weld a tang in the spike to attach a handle too.... I think it might be ok... He went to work on the handle and is going to use a three layer laminated maple configuration with a couple of brass bolts to attach the epoxied in handle... Someone has probably done it before but I felt good about the solution... just slit a hole and forged down a chunk of 3/8"X1" to fit..

Good solution. I have seen old axes and hammers with two wings on either side of the handle that were either welded or riveted to the head and cross bolted thru all the members but your method is cleaner and leaves a more elegant result.
