I am working up a price for a customer on hammers, axes, and knives... Having a heck of a time finding a source of 1080 in bar stock and axe head sizes; 4140 in 1 3/4" square bar. :banghead: The gal at Pacific Machinery and Tool Steel told me the mills aren't making the stuff. Are we gonna have to go back to welding in a piece of high carbon for a hammer or an axe?? I'm in Junction City, Oregon... Anybody got any ideas??

Thanks Gene: Didn't get to meet you at the last conference!! Hopefully will some day... Coyote is my main steel supplier and they don't have; can't get the stuff I need... Been on the phone and the internet trying to source these tool steels... Can't find 'em...
Where are you located? Love to meet you...

Your going to hate what it costs but they can get you anything that is available (1080 might not be among the steel rolled at the moment but they will have some 10 series high carbon most likely) Bohler deals only in high end and exotic alloys and cold finish bars... Last time I priced some 4340 it was in the $5/lb range from them and I bought it from Pacific for about $2/lb delivered but lots of stuff Pacific just doesn't have
For larger quantity call Bohler-Uddeholm

They where better to deal with when they where summerville steel but they have a huge world wide inventory
The other folks I would talk to for knife specific steels is Alpha knife supply 425-868-5880

For making 4140 hammers I think the thing to do is buy 2 1/4" "tool bar" which is the implement stuff.. I have quite a bit of it and it works out well. I made a 6 lb sledge for my pop out of some last night.... Most ag/tractor shops stock implement tool bar and its always 4140
Whatever you are, be a good one.

I just looked on Bohler;s web site and they only list 1045 in the carbon steel section.... it might be that buying carbon steel from Alpha or someone like them is the only reasonable thing for small (less than ton) quantity's

Buy round bar and forge it square. A lot of alloy bars are not easily available in square, I am sometimes offered square cut from plate which is way more expensive. Even when it is available in square, round is usually much cheaper. Often 50% to 100%.
I usually get good prices on 4140 from EMJ which is headquartered out your way. But if you are not buying $500-1000 minimum they won't talk to you.

When I had my machine shop, EMJ treated me well and always seemed to maintain a good inventory.

Down in Calif. tul-bar is 1070 steel. I have a new bar for misc use and have cert papers for it. I think it came from nucor.

I buy a lot of stuff from tool steel services in commerce CA. They may have some of it.
Also Admiral steel has a large selection for knife makers. I don't know if it'll be that big though. They're nice and if you call them they can probably point you in the right direction

Online metals 1 3/4" 4140 hex for 4 bucks a pound
I soooooo miss Summerville steel. Fortunately I got in there a few years ago when EVERYTHING on the scrap shelves was 1$/lb. I've got blocks of D-2. H-13 and S-7 I don't know what to do with. Of course they'll hit you at around 8$ lb for all that stuff these days.
Silas turned me back on to Online metals after I strayed for awhile. The 2 buck chuck (2$/lb) 8620 is the sale of the century. Forges and machines like a dream. Hardens like 4140 but takes a case hardening like a man. They use it alot in industry for camshafts, gears and breaker bits
I oil hardened several rivet dies I made with it and they held up fine, I think I coulda pushed it with water and gone with a higher temper. Live and learn, hopefully without shrapnel.:p
They only remember you when you SCREW UP~!!!

They told me when I ordered it it was 1045 which is what I wanted to make hammers out of but the cert showed 1070:) Without the cert papers I dont much trust the salesmen. They can still give you the wrong papers.
Tul-bar also comes in smaller sizes.
