My name is Ben Willard and I am a senior at Monroe High School, at Monroe High school there is a mandatory project called the Culminating Challenge and as part of the Culminating Challenge every senior must find a mentor to help them compleat a task and my preliminary area of interest is to practice blacksmithing after High School. As part of the Culminating Challenge every senior must choose and follow up on completing a project under the supervision of the mentor that must be connected to the field of choice, being as my preliminary interest is Blacksmithing after I graduate I have chosen to practice and build something under the supervision of a blacksmith as my project.

As part of the mentor choosing we must all choose an expert in the field we want to follow, as this is a blacksmith forum this seems ideal for the position and as such respectfully request that someone becomes my mentor for the task of building something. The major tasks of a mentor is to A. help determine if the project is doable, B. Help complete a packet that I the student will provide and C. provide guidance as I complete the task, the entire project must be 20 hours long, not all consecutive and you do not have to be there for all. 10 hours must be the actual project while the other ten can be preparatory.

I understand how valuable time is and do so solemnly swear to work to the best of my ability to keep this process should you accept as quick and painless and possible for both of us, I would love a reply soon, bad news or not. You may contact me at (360)-348-2738 as a cell phone, by email at benwilla@hotmail.com or back on this thread. please do understand as i am in high school i may not respond to phone calls before 2:30 in the evening.

Hey Ben: I am west of Junction City 8 1/2 miles. Not far from you... However, I am not an "expert blacksmith", but I do okay. You can check out some of my work on my website listed below.(most of the stuff I have done is not on the website 'cause I didn't take photos before my customer left with the item.) I would be happy to take you on as a student and help with your project, within my skills, of course. Twenty hours could avail you to make a heck of a project or almost nothing... Depends totally on your ability to learn... Learn to run a hammer, learn to move metal the direction you want it to go, learn to punch holes, learn to forge weld. What is your experience with welding, forging etc? Send me a pm if you are interested...

Way to go Lynn. If I were you Ben I'd take him up on his offer.

While I was unaware but and now quite acutely aware, Monroe High school is apparently a common name and I live up in Washington. While I do really appreciate your offer and would love to join you the distance is just a little to far to travel too often, that doesn’t completely rule you out distance wise however, until I turn the age of 18 (in 16 days) I cannot legally cross over into Oregon. I can drive and I can drive well however until November 18 I cannot legally accept your offer without asking you to drive to me and I will not ask you to do that. That all being said shoot me an email and we can converse about life and what not until such a time as I can ether accept or it turns out my neighbor is a secret blacksmith in his free time and I go a different route. Thank you for putting your name out there, I really appreciate knowing someone is reading.

Sincerely, Ben Willard

Ben
Searching the NWBA membership list indicates there IS a blacksmith in your backyard. At least he has a Monroe, WA. address. Whether he is active on the forum or able to help in your situation is another issue. The point is: there are lots of us out here and we are everywhere when you get to looking and asking around. There are many NWBA smiths on your side of the Sound.

Our local school has a similar program and I've helped several students who've done their Senior project here. I would have offered, but we are a ferry ride away, Poulsbo.

Tell us what you have in mind for your project?

Ben I am in Auburn and might be willing to help. I would want to know what your project is, that you have some heath insurance and know working in a shop can be dangerous and know a little something about your work ethic... If you are willing to get to Auburn maybe we could meet someplace and have lunch or something and talk..

Whatever you are, be a good one.

So as a guy I have a natural want to make some kind of sword, as a guy that’s my natural inclination yet I can totally do anything else. I have very little experience with blacksmithing as all I have at my disposal is a blow torch, a grinding wheel and a tinny hammer, unbeknownst to me if you heat what every my back stairs are made of they pop and explode at you. Any work ethic I have comes from my four years of JROTC, I like to think I have a nice work ethic but it’s not my place to judge it’s our teachers place to judge, if it’s any show of work I am the commander of Monroe. Yes I have health insurance and yes, lunch sounds nice.
