Hi,
I am new to blacksmithing. I recently picked up a Kohlswa anvil and already have a nice crosspeen hammer. I plan on using vice grips to hold my metal. One of the first projects I plan on making is a pair of tongs.
I am getting ready to build a simple brake drum forge. I was wondering where I can get coal for it locally. I live near Everett.
Thanks for your help,
Mike

Hi Mike,
Welcome to the NWBA. I'm not sure of the Everett area but James Von Mosch (ok I'm sure I misspelled his last name, my apologies) usually comes to the conferences and brings some with him for sale. He also periodically goes to the monthly hammer-ins in Longview. If you were to contact him you might be able to arrange picking some up at one of the events there.
You can make punches and stuff pretty much without tongs, same as for making tongs on one end of a bar so that you do not always need tongs to make tongs. We will be making some punches, chisels, center punch, and fullers at the upcoming mentoring center event.
