Hey guys. Does anyone have experience with heat treating dies from 4340? I understand how to do it but I'm worried that if the alloy is not very user-friendly I may get cracks with these thicker pieces. Should the entire die be quenched or just the top couple of inches? I machined dovetails and don't know if the change in thickness will lead to any cracking. Thanks a lot

Hi how big are the dies that you are talking about. We normally heat the whole dies in our elect furnace then oil quench and temper back in the elecky furnace. Depending on how large the dies are you may have to quench in water to get the center to harden enough.
There are hammer dies and then there are HAMMER dies

They're small dies. Only 2" x 4". I went ahead and treated according to what I've read and they seem to have turned out fine. I was just worried that the difference in thickness at the dovetail part would cause cracking but I was very careful and used an electric furnace with a long soak. Everything work out. Thanks for the reply.
