I bought a bunch of power hammer tongs at a boat shop in seattle that use to be Lo Brekke blacksmith shop like 100 years ago. I have about 40-50 pair that I would like to clean up to see if anyone has any interest in them. I am a fab guy and have always had a love for smithing but have not taken the time to do so.
I was thinking of soaking them in oil and wire brushing them, but thought why not ask NWBA for thought.
Thanks Lance

What for? Those tongs will derust and loosen up when they go in the fire. If you are going to sell them , most new owners like to adjust and set the tong to their own liking. The rust will burn off em ,the reins ll get smooth from being gripped.Just my 2 cents worth.............

A Tumbler would do an easier job of removing the loose flake. Not the tumbler that holds your wobbly-pop!!:)

Any interest? the count is 54, I am going to number them and pictures. What do you think? I have been a member for years off and on, just not sure if they are worth anything or not. I was thinking of taking them to the spring conference to sell. Thanks

Sounds like a good candidate for electrolysis.

Yep I agree and like with the electro way as well, used it quite a bit, as well for the exhaust manifold on the ute before I welded it up. Makes you look a bit like the mad scientist....:smoke:

Lance, are you in Seattle? I'd tumble them for you. Tumbling not only cleans them up but frees up sticky rivets as well

They only remember you when you SCREW UP~!!!

I'm with Bruce- let the new owner make the decisions about how/when/if. The conference folks will snap them up if the prices are reasonable.

Somebody agreed with me. Not that it's a big deal or anything.....BUT.....doesn't it seem like there is a little mystique about that rusty pair of tongs you pick up or pull out of a bucket? You look em over and ....will they loosen up?......do they fill that empty spot in the rack?......geeeeez I wonder how much? And the real clincher....Man I saw that other guy looking at em and I wonder if he's really interested? What is it with?......TONGS.....anyway!

OK, fess up. Who else has ever been at a garage sale, estate sale or flea market and said, "how much do you want for those rusty old pliers?"

🙂

This is a surprisingly effective method. I tried it out myself, and although the mixture has a nasty froth it eats rust leaving bare metal... 9:1 ratio of water to molasses IICRC...
