Hi Joff,

Welcome to the NWBA. I know there is at least one good smith in Idaho. Just don't know how to get ahold of him. They are out there.

Having someone go to you would be rather expensive. Add in airfare, per diem, hotel, daily income, etc. The daily cost would be greater then the cost of a 2-3 or so day class. I only know the name of one of the blacksmiths in Idaho off the top of my head but I do not have the contact information or permission to give his name out. I do know I've heard of others. You might try a different approach by way of letting everyone you chat with know that you are looking for a somewhat nearby blacksmith instructor, or even a skilled hobby smith that can help teach you. Even bringing it up to a stranger in a store can jog someone memory to go oh yeah ...........Local farriers may have contact information with other blacksmiths too. You might also try looking for someone across the border in Oregon.

Welcome Joff.  If you haven't already, I'd recommend joining the NWBA, not very expensive.  Once you are a member, you will have access to a membership roster, and I just looked and there are 5 folks listed in Idaho, and 3 in Boise.  Then you could try to contact them directly with your question.

Then maybe doing is what you need to do, and if what you did doesn't work, do something different.

You said you've hit a roadblock in your forging, and it sounds like you've hit another one in your searching, so how about trying something different and explain the smithing roadblock and maybe you'll get some direction.
