I am a total noob to blacksmithing. Never had a desire to try this until I watched a guy make a Tomahawk at the
Oregon state fair.

I bought a Hawk from him and its now my favorite woods tool. After that I was hooked. Since then I have been slowly collecting the things I need to give this a go.

Need to assemble my forge, find a place to buy coal and I should be good to go. Got a huge box of railroad spikes at a garage sale I'm going to practice on and my wife fanagled me a 2 foot chunk of railroad rail from a guy she does business with.

Cant wait to give it a try. Anyway, just a HELLO from a guy in the Portland burbs.

You'll be seeing a lot of silly questions from me so thanks for your patience before hand.

Great to be here.

Hey Charlie, welcome.

Everyone in the NWBA and on this site is great about sharing knowledge, so there really isn't such a thing as a silly question!

James von Mosch is the guy with high-quality blacksmithing coal in the area (check out his recent post in the For Sale forum). He lives in White Salmon which isn't too far, but he has also been bringing it to the NWBA events.

I highly recommend checking out the spring conference in April in Longview. It's money well spent. Access to good information, new friends, old tools for sale.

There are several of us here in the Portland area trying to build some synergy/help each other along. It's cool you found this site early on!

Thanks for the info sir. I just may be able to make that trip if I can convince the wife. Very eager to get started. Soon. Lol
