hi there, my name is tim, my son jay and i might have met some of you at the longview expo center at the january hammer in. we signed up for a trial membership and jay was number 100 through the door! he still wears the hat he won every day.
we stayed until lunch before we headed down to cathlamet to pick up my grandad's old anvil.
it has been tossed in the back of trucks with heavy equipment and used in his shop for his logging business. it has been used for a welding / cutting table and abused every way imaginable. probably all before i was born in 1970 (it has more scars than me)...
in the late 80's i spent all my high school years at a forge and none since. i have a pretty decent amateur metal shop that i have put together over the years but no blacksmith goodness till now.
anyways, the word is that a bad anvil is better than no anvil at all. it looks serviceable to me but macguiver is always whispering in the back of my mind...
here are a few pics of the anvil after i brushed it off some:
nice chunk blasted out of the side
a few pix of the horn
heel and foot
top etc...
markings
here's a deep shot for all the perverts!
told ya she was ugly....
i think i can get some of the weld off of there to make it more serviceable. the top is still mostly flat too. very slight saddling.

That's a good start there Tim, looks like it's been a bit abused and used but still looks very usable to me. I think all I would do with that is to grind the weld spatter off, resurface the top and you're good to go!
Bill Apple re-surfaced a couple of anvils for my girlfriend and I a few years back. Not sure if he's got time for doing that now, but I'm sure there's someone around that does.
