Hello to all! I live in Oly (though considering a move to the dry side of the state in a year or two). My brief intro to blacksmithing (in high school) smoldered inside me until last year, when I took a class at Arbutus Folk School here in Olympia. Three or four classes later (and too much money into tools, which is typical for my hobbies) and I'm raring to go!
With much advice and assistance from my instructor (and now friend) Kelly of Big Hammer Technology, I made my Dad a large Christmas present of initials (about 12-16" tall). The letters displayed many techniques: upsetting, twisting, stub tenon through punched hole, scrolling, etc. I've made some other items as gifts, but that has been the highlight so far!
This is just a hobby for now, though I'll eventually try to sell something, just for the experience. I'm looking forward to attending some of the events down south, meeting new people, and absorbing more knowledge. Thanks for this group!
James
