Greetings fellow smiths!

I've been playing with metal on and off for about 2 years now and decided to join up after an encounter with another smith at the Washington State Fair. I am intending to attend the event on the 22nd of this month and cannot wait to meet some more dirty faces.

When I can get away from my day job in IT, I consider myself mostly a knifemaker but I dabble in a bit of art for my wife (she is an amateur photographer and likes things for people to hold), and I am starting to fiddle with leather for sheathing. My far out there dream is making Damascus kitchen knives and handing them out as gifts.

I've started a blog to show off and keep track of my projects. Feel free to take a peek at http://www.RAMFORGED.com. Also feel free to provide commentary, I do already know that the quality is still in the universally crap state, but would love process recommendations or ways to avoid pitfalls you might see me make.

One process that I am struggling with and would love recommended reading or videos on is how to draw down to a specific uniform width. I keep getting handles that are too thin at the end.

Hope to see you around!

I'm also new to the NWBA! Good to see another IT Geek shedding the technology on the off time 🙂

See you at the mentoring event on the 22nd!

It depends on what kind of handles you're making, and the material you start out with.

If the width of the handle is correct from the parent stock, then be sure to draw down only the upper part of the handle and to smash it down on the flat side to keep it uniform.

If you're dealing with material that is too thin for the width you want the handle, the only things I can think of are to either upset the handle enough so that when you flatten it back out it will be the proper width and thickness, or to hammer the upper part of the handle to the thickness of the lower part.

Just keep checking your work and keep an eye on places that need to be thinner, and with smart hammering, making uniform thickness should get easier.

Just having some fun messing around with whatever I have a mind to do.
