Neighbor has been trying to sell me his compressor for the last five years. Turned out it was a pretty nice 10HP single-phase machine. Heavy duty, not like a lot of the crap you see now. Being my neighbor, I didn't really haggle much and someone had told him he should get $500. Seemed OK to me.

Looks likes it's in pretty fair condition too.....What took you so long, cripes another year or two and he might have GIVEN it to you.....
I put a 10hp sf motor on mine and cost 6-7 hundred alone without the starter......Ah but Craftsman still sucks........:smug:

Well, that's not the actual one, that's from the factory website. The one I got has a TEFC motor, the whole thing is a little old but seems to work good.

''Pretty fair'' was what I considered to be mildly understated in relation to the pic...:p
It's kinda cool how some of the decent compressor outfits have started putting 10 hp 1ph motors on their rigs....When I converted mine awhile back to 10 hp 1ph there were no options like that on factory units....I know Baldor makes up to a 15 hp 1ph but the starter alone costs as much as a rotary ph converter...That's why I run a 10 and a 5. Nice score, GOOD NEIGHBOR!

Yeah Bruce, This one looks like someone retrofitted the single-phase motor at some point. Really nice looking GE TEFC motor.

Friend of mine wants to sell me a 30 hp screw compressor with a largish tank for cheap but I do not have a need, or the 3 phase power. 120psi@140cfm

That is a quality compressor. 33 cfm (free air delivered) on single phase with relatively low revs at the pump which keeps the temperature lower which in turn means any moisture that got evaporated, condenses back into water droplets quicker and is easier to remove from the airstream.
I am envious of the fact you can run 10 hp on 230 volt single phase. we can usually only run 3 or 4 HP on 1Ph.

I got my "new" compressor installed today. As you can see it doesn't look quite the same as the above picture. That 10HP single-phase motor is a bit bigger.
I noticed about 15 years ago that GE went to this style on their big single-phase motors with that whopping big box on the side. Finally figured out that they quit making big single-phase motors. This is actually a 15HP three-phase motor with "run" capacitors! This method only yields 2/3 of rated power so they downrate it to 10HP!

That would help to explain why their big single phase motor are so expensive.

Wow! I'm impressed! When the pressure gets down to 135 it kicks in and pumps it back up to 175 .........in about 20 seconds! My old dual 5hp compressors seemed to run forever filling two 60 gallon tanks. The new one has a single 80 gallon tank.
