Greetings.

I'm not planning on doing any casting or a whole lot of smelting at all, I'm just interested in making some bronze.

If possible, I would appreciate some help in identifying this crucible:

CRUCIBLE CLAY GRAPHITE CAPACITY...

. . . or if it would be worth purchasing. Any help is appreciated. (And not buying it before me would also be appreciated if it's good.)

Price on that one is about half what you would pay at Budget Casting Supply. You should also check with LaGrande Industrial Supply ((503) 224-5800) for their price on a #2 clay-graphite.

And yes, it will handle molten bronze. A buddy of mine used one just like that to make some bell-metal from electrical wire and lead-free plumbers solder. It is actually possible to dissolve copper in the molten tin with the mix below copper's melting point. Takes a good long while, though.

I made some aluminum bronze in a wee assay crucible once. It was also clay-graphite.

No matter where you go... there you are.

Your reply is much appreciated! I think I will end up buying that one, so thanks for the help!

Apologies for the double post, but I thought this would be better than starting a whole new topic for it.

I got the crucible (works very well), but when trying to make the bronze I ended up with sulfuric substance building up on the top and making gasses. I couldn't find any information on a situation like this, so I'm asking here. It may be that the first time I didn't use a protectant on top (second time I used some borax, which did a good job), so that may be it combined with the smokey atmosphere it was susceptible to since I was using a coal forge for heating it and that I only made a few ounces as an experiment.

  Any help will be good.
