Here are some pics of a Kerrihard I picked up at an auction yesterday. I thinks it the 30lb version. It looks to be in good shape. The guide system will need some work and I need to fab up a better drive system but it doesn't look like it will be to bad. Anyone out there own one of these? This is the first I've seen in person. Nice size hammer to fit in my garage. I'm hoping this will work for me till I have the time & space to restore my bigger Beaudry. Got it unloaded today and snapped a few pictures. I'll try and post some better pics when I get time. I'm hoping to go through it this winter. I ran out of room in my truck or I could have bought a 7" Ammco shaper to help me make some new dies for it.

hi will,
nice looking hammer! I am trying to get one running, but realized the drive shaft is MIA. it seems to be the same diameter as the helve beam, but i have no idea what the overall length should be or what all is on the shaft. it seems that it ought to be threaded at each end for the nuts. any measurements/descriptions/photos would be appreciated.

mahalo(thanks)

I've taken the ram/spring assembly apart and am working on fixing the guides & worn pins. I haven't taken the drive shaft assembly apart yet but I can get you some outside measurements and pictures as it is now. When I get around to taking it further apart I can get you some better info.

Are you missing just the shaft itself?

looks interesting ... keep us informed when ya get it up and running! always figured that hammer would make a nice portable hammer ! hook it to a small early gas engine and away ya go !it should weigh in the 700 lb range if it is the 30 lb one....

Although slow progress has been made! My dad cut the keys out of the dies with a sawzall and a stiff metal blade. The edge of the ram dovetail suffered a small nick from the saw. I figure I'll use a small round file to smooth it out to reduce the chances of a crack forming there. I had wrestled with them trying to punch & pull the keys out for months.

The top die looks old/original but the lower die is a crude fabricated replacement with the dovetail taper torch cut in. The surface of the top die is covered in cracks. I'm glad now I never tried to run it with the old dies in.

The base of the lower lower dovetail in the anvil has a shallow wallow worn in it & the "T" pockets in the ram are worn. Anyone out there have any tips for repairing either of these issues? Right now I'm figuring on having to file down the rest of the dovetail to level out the wallow. I'm not really sure on the best way to tackle the "T" bolt pockets in the ram

I'll get some pics up this weekend if I have the time.

Yet another reason to mourn the death of our good friend Grant Sarver- he could have made you a new bottom die, from the proper steel, with the right dovetail angle, heat treated, that would last 50 years.

But he aint here no more. Hope he is having fun where ever he is...

Finally had a chance to take some pictures. The cracks in the lower die and the wallow in the lower dovetail don't show up well in the photographs. I picked up a 1/4" thick brass bar to fashion into a replacement for the missing piece that rides against the ram to tighten up the guides.

The old dies are about 2-1/2" wide x 4" long x 3 to 3-1/2" tall. The top die appears to have had a chunk of flatbar welded to the top. I want to clean up the upper and lower dovetails, reinstall the guide and get everything adjusted/shimmed before I measure for new dies. On the old ones the dovetail angle is continuous from the base to the top. If I make the new ones the same I think I can have them rough cut with a bandsaw and clean them up on my large disk sander with the table set to the appropriate angle.

I got a deal on a bunch of 4340 in a good size to make some new dies. Had two 4 3/16" pieces sliced off already. They're about 10lbs each. I attached a pic of one of the new blanks next to the old dies. Once the weather warms up I need to get in gear & finish repairing the die cavities.

Any updates? I've been ghosting this post and just picked up a Kerrihard myself. The die on mine has had a sow block from another machine wedged into it, but otherwise everything looks and runs great.
