I took off the motor from the little giant I just purchased. It is a very old 2 hp, 3 phase, 220/440, 1800 rpm, with a 1" shaft. I took it down to the local electric motor repair shop. I need a single phase. Of course, the only shaft size they can get is 7/8" or 1 1/8". The owner suggested a 3 hp motor as he felt that the 2 hp motors today are not as strong as the current models. Of course, the bolt pattern will be completely different. Any comments on shaft size and horsepower needs?

All you have to do is get a 7/8 to 1'' bushing to use the old pulley which I assume you want to do....2hp is plenty. I ran a 50lb LG for years with a 1 1/2, but it had a jackshaft. Cheap import motors are always over rated.
