Somebody had some neat bottle cap roses over on IFI. I'm too crippled to swing a hammer but may be able to bend some bottle caps into rose shape if I can figure out how to fasten the punched caps on to a piece of stiff wire. To small for anything I weld with. Any ideas??

 thanks, Eric S.

Greetings Eric ,

like you ,I am in the same fix sometimes when I need to attach small items.I have finally resorted to a small oxy/acet. torch. It is along the line of a jewelers torch. It creates a small pencil size flame ,depending on the tip size. The part I like about the small size welding torch is ,it gives you three options. You can weld it with mild steel rod(an old wire coat hanger will do), you can braze it with borax and bronze rod, the third choice is a small drop of high content silver solder wire. When we as smiths do this small work ,part of the hard part is seeing what you are doing. I resisted for years but now use an old gas welding lense holder with a 2x cheater lense to enlarge the work area. I mig weld ,tig weld and stick weld a lot of projects and also forge weld whenever I can. If you have a victor series 100 mixing barrel ,try the 00 tip and run it slightly reducing with a drop of silver solder and let the wire stem hold most of the heat. I am not an expert but I will try anything once and go from there. Also, I didn't see this rose project on IFI but I will look if they come back.Good Luck to you.

Good idea to use the cheater!  Anyone know if you can get safety glasses in a number 5 shade with reading lenses??
