Had an interesting experience yesterday. As I've said, I never wear a glove on my hammer hand. Well, I spent some time grinding and had cotton gloves on and then had a few hours of hand hammering to do. I had left my gloves on and after awhile my hand was getting sore. Took my glove off and hammered for a couple more hours.

Seems with the glove on I was having to grip the hammer tighter causing the soreness. The frictional coefficient of a bare hand on wood is absolutely ideal. I could really feel the difference once I took the glove off. So I tried a few other kinds of gloves. Nothing gave me the relaxed feel of a bare hand. A rubber faced glove was pretty good, but I don't think that's a good idea forging and I didn't like it either.

Just an observation for your consideration.

Hey Grant, maybe you'd look good in a rubber apron too, maybe even a rubber face mask when grinding away ...... oops, wrong site ......

No, actually I'm into iron and leather!

Just a comment on the rubber faced gloves: They were TOO sticky. You'd be surprised at the small adjustments you make to your grip "on the fly", the rubber gloves interfered with that ability. It's a subtle thing.

A blacksmith isn't just bashing, he's molding shapes with his hammer and the hammer must be a relaxed extension of his hand. You just can't have anything interfering with that.

I will sometimes go from the power hammer to the anvil with a glove on. I often pick up the hammer with a glove still on and I find that it both feels awkward and if I keep using the glove I do get fatigue in my hand and sometimes my elbow starts to bother me. I do my best to remember to lose the glove when I pick up a hammer.

On a related note has anyone else found gloves are getting smaller? I like to have gloves that are loose enough to fling off both so I can pick up a hammer and if they get too hot. I have been having a hard time finding gloves that have a cotton back have no knit cuff and most importantly are large enough. I don't have small hands but they are not particularly large either.

In heavy hammer work, we always got "hot mill" gloves. Heavy cotton with canvas gauntlets.

Try here for online: HOT MILL GLOVES

I wear gloves pretty much all the time, and have never had a problem with it.
I get less blisters, and my hands are smooth and pretty, and due to the skin on my hands being softer than a baby's butt, I get more girls than Hugh Hefner. Dont tell my wife.

Really, I think its just what you are used to.

Self taught, I never had anybody to tell me NOT to wear gloves, and I do so many different things in the course of a day, welding, machining, forging, and more- so I just wear gloves as a default option, and usually have em on when hand hammering.

works fine for me.

I wear thin leather "drivers gloves" most of the time.
Maybe if I didnt wear them, though, I would be the greatest blacksmith of all time.
But I am afraid I might have a lot more kids, too...
