I finished my first knife today. I don't know what type of steel it is other than being buggy seat spring. Junk yard stuff. Same for the brass that formed the guard and rivets. Didn't take very long to forge but it took forever to grind and polish.

I left the back of the blade in its raw forged form. I just like it that way.

Nice job Tom, I'm still working on my first knife. How did the heat treat go?

Regards,
Tim

Thanks, Tim.

Pretty well. I quenched it in used motor oil. It flashed and I had to cover the pan with a sheet of metal to smother it. I drew temper with a blowtorch, tempered to purple.

Good Morning,

When I was in Helsinki, I bought a Puukko knife at the town market place, The blade faces were the colour of the heat treating and the back of the blade was as forged (black). I thought it made a nice contrast to what we normally see as a polished blade. I still think the same after a few years (amazing that I can even still think!!)

I enjoy seeing what you have done with your first knife. Please don't let your friends hinder further development.

There are no walls. ENJOY!!

I like that idea. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I sharpened it tonight. As my friends and family would expect from me it's fricken scary sharp! [Image Can Not Be Found]

I put a few scratches in the pretty blade in the process but I don't care. This was always intended to be a working knife. And it is.

I love knife making.
The only part I don't like is all the hand sanding.
So naturally that takes more time than all the other processes.
Since knives are made to go 'cut', if they take a decent edge and are sharp I think yours passed.
My first knife did cut, but it embarrassed me so much I dumped it in the garbage can the next day 🙂
You done good!

Dave
