I just started beating and this was born. One of the things I need guidance on is how do I use a common bench grinder to put the correct bevels on the blade. I basically hammered the blade to an approximate edge shape and coarse grinded it for an edge. I tried to minimize the need for grinding by hammering to shape as much as possible. I'm enthusiastic, but not gifted.
Thanks,
Scott

You might try a belt sander for the bevel. I'm a fan of draw-filing but not sure how that would work with something that big. That is unless you were trying for a concave edge in which case a grinder would be better, I think.
To do any more work on it you're going to want to soften it back up though. So far as I know, quenching should be one of the very last things you do. Trying to work metal that's already hardened is going to take longer and wear down your tools faster.
Because blacksmithing is totally Metal! /../

Good Morning,
Zachary is correct. Heat treating is one of the last jobs. Reheat and let cool slowly, grind to shape, make parts for handle (don't install handle until after heat treating). Chew gum and blow bubbles, smile a lot!! The slower you hurry up, the better the job. Make it pretty, not pretty good.;)
