This will probably be a first and last for me, as I don't feel that anvil identification is that difficult after sourcing my own copy of AIA, but this one's a tough one...
I picked this up off the fleaBay. I passed over it for the past month and never gave it any thought whatsoever... Then as the asking price dropped from ridiculous to "fair", I took a better look... Shame on me... Pictures were forensically adjusted by my super-anvil-identity-computer, and surprisingly it got me no closer to the truth, and left me more stumped. I had to be the guy to pick it up simply because I wanted to find out what the hell it is...
So maybe someone can ruin it for me ahead of time... before it arrives on my front porch... Or just call me a dummy for picking up some eurotrash ASO...
without further ado...
regular pic...
Black/White...
The things I see in the clouds...
AIA only mentions one anvil that's arc-welded at the waist; Peddinghaus...
Seller states 120lbs. aprx. and I can identify that it is marked 53kg, which is (117 lbs. ish)
There looks to be a clear "Crown" too... Maybe someone knocked the tits of a Kslaw, it broke at the waist, and they made a horrible attempt to arc-weld it back together??? I've read that this sometimes happened, Peter Wrights being the least likely to break at the waist...
I hope you find it as interesting as I did... *still scratching my head...

I think it looks German... I wouldn't be scart to hit it with a hammer.... If find your offended by it when it shows up let me know and I'll put the girl to work...
Whatever you are, be a good one.

Old Peddinghaus from the 1970's??? If 1970 birth is old, I am damned old...:skull::skull::skull:

Got her today, and started in on her with a light cupbrush... Not a single marking, so my imagination failed. I'm certain it's of one thing though; It's a top of the line, unfinished, factory junker. Think it's a Phaus, but can't verify that unless it's a known fact that PFP casted anvils in a 2 piece, closed die, and then forge welded when the initial pour was still hot... or if the two pieces were cast and forged separately, then brought up to heat and forge welded together...???
unfinished horn
There was still scale on the face, it cleaned up real nice... hard enough for a file to skip across it, but the rebound sucked... maybe %50-60% at most...
Then I started digging the crud that had collected where the anvil was forge welded together... and look what I found...
... dug more crud out, and TA'DAAAA!!!! This is what happens when anvils don't brush their teeth...;)
The casting flaw is quite prolific, I poured a whole 8oz of water into it before it started to overflow...lol
My dad turned the corner into the shop right as I started to drain it, and the look on his face was quite priceless...
So now I have a new fun filled project ahead of me. I'm going to cut it at the waist, drill and grind out as much of the inclusion that I can, heat it up, fill it in/build up with 7018, reharden the face, and arc weld it back together. figure the rehardening shouldn't be that difficult due to the relatively small mass, a few trash pumps should do the trick...
So yeah, sometime the bear gets you.
