Thanks Gene,
Grant still makes the best commercial tongs available, and I have a bunch of them. But, I decided that as a blacksmith, it was important to me to make my own tongs/tools, and take pride in doing so. Not being an accomplished metal muncher, this jig has made tong making a whole lot easier, and has somewhat satisfied my need to be more self sufficient, which is something we all should strive for.
After all, the beauty of the work we do is to not only create the end piece, but to build the process from start to finish. The process intrigues me as much as the finished piece.

Nice job John. I might make something similar, not for production - just for fun. I can't believe I just said that. Can you imagine that I could still consider tong making as fun?:wavespin::dance::dance::playfull: Something not right there.

John, I've raved enthusiastically about your jig over at IfettleIron so I might as well do over here. It works wonderfully well and has been well worth my time making one. I did use 4340 including the puck for the base, cos I can see me using it a LOT. Over time I'm gonna replace my previous ham fisted tongs with ones made with this jig. I'll also scale it up for some larger tongs.
The only slight drawback is ideally you need a large area to the power hammer flat dies, The ones on my Kinyon are around 5" x 2.5" but could do with being bigger for a scaled up jig.

Yep, looks like mine. Hey, wait a minute. Did Larry Langdon send mine across the pond to you? He still hasn't returned mine. Hmmmm...I better send Uncle Guido up for a visit. 🙂
