Here are a couple pics of the front of what's left of the eye.
Jeff, I'll let you determine if there is a piece of harder steel left in that bit, but my opinion is that there is. That rust was more persistent than anywhere else on the piece and as I recall, higher carbon steel rusts more than wrought.

had a similar experience.. got some wrought off the beach in halifax.. it stunk and crumbled alot... some of it forged out but other pieces were way too far gone..
oh.. i've also forged old wagon wheel wrought and it stinked aswell... guess if you parked your wagon next to the manure pile, the run off gave the wrought a distinct smell
- like urine vapourized pepper spray... hah
