I am looking for 1/4" or preferably 5/16" round and 3/8" sq. soft iron for making rivets to fasten planking on a historical project of the Viking era. I am also looking for some flat bar of the same type or 1/2" round I can break down. Rivets will be peened down over a washer or rode, cold. My question is: what type of low carbon iron do I need to be looking for? Daytime shop # 360-856-0634 or Ken Williams

If you really want soft iron, look for #2 tie wire it is about 1/4" dia. It should be dead soft and available in big coils. I would recommend contacting a contractor doing LARGE reinforced concrete work. Perhaps they may donate some if it's for a good cause (ie: non-profit) organization.
Good Luck,
Mike

I already told Ken this- but tie wire is black annealed steel, and there is an outfit in LA, Artsons, that sells black annealed in every size round from .048 to 1/2", in any size piece you want, from 1" long to rolls hundreds of feet long.

I have been buying from the for years, its great stuff. I buy in 10 foot lengths, a 100lbs at a time, and pay truck freight.

I have heard there may be a place in Kent, too, that sells annealed wire as well. Cant remember the name, though.

Thanks for the info. I'm new to the area (WA) and haven't been doing much here lately.
