I built my treadle hammer with a solid column to support the anvil. On the net I have seen a few designs where the anvil is supported by two columns. That design allows a drift to pass through the hardy hole.
I used a 3 inch wide piece of 6 inch square tubing with a 3/8 inch wall to make a device that makes drifting possible on my hammer. I reinforced the tube with 1/2X1 inch flat bar.
The square tube provides four faces for various holes. I used one face for round drifts, and one face for square drifts. I have holes for 1/4, 3/8, &1/2 inch drifts.
