I have a kindle too. It's not as nice as .pdf file on a computer, but it does store a huge number of books, and is very easy to pack/store. So a huge win for traveling.
The graphics are sometimes (not always) iffy - so it is superb for books that are mostly just text (novels), and sometimes only so-so for books with graphs, etc.
Another huge win for the kindle is that you can click on a title on amazon, and it will appear in minutes on the reader. So you can get a book on something you need to know about right now at 2am on a Sunday. (Yes, I have actually done this a couple of times.)

She Who Must Be Obeyed received a new Kendle for Christmas. She has a few complaints, but has been using it daily. I've been reading PDFs and Epubs on my lap top for years. I can see that the Kendle/Nook is handier, but don't want one. If I get a new laptop I'd think about a lap/tablet where the screen folds open at a desk or swivels to face up like a tablet. I'd still rather hold a book. (part Ludite I guess)

My wife bought me a Kobo for Christmas. It comes preloaded with 100 classics although many of those that I am interested in I have already read. It can read PDFs as well as the epub files. So far I like it although I cannot see using it for magazine reading as the screen is not in colour. So far I have downloaded a few free books from the Gutenburg project.

My daughter works for Apple and she and my son bought us an IPad for Christmas. It's pretty amazing. My wife owns a bookstore and is none too happy with the e-readers. However, even she is smitten with the IPad. Now I can surf while sitting in bed at night...that is WHEN I get to touch it. 🙂

A year and a half ago, I bought a cheap Linux netbook, partly to read books when I travel. Turns out Linux isn't compatible with the DRM software on the books you pay to download. It worked out okay for me -- I download free out-of-copyright books from Google to keep me occupied, and the computer's great for surfing the web. But don't buy a Linux netbook if you're looking for a book reader.

Here is a site that has quite a few eBooks for sale relatively cheap. There may or may not be something there that you'll want.

Mike,
There have been huge amounts of progress since you "bought" your cheap "Linux Netbook". You see, you bought a "Netbook" not an "E-Reader" and if you look at the new "E-Readers" that most of them are actually running on a Linux/Unix Base. Apple Runs on Unix believe it or not ... it's called "OSX" to which Apple has many different "Code names" to keep us all guessing. In fact, there are only 2 companies that are actually producing a "Windows" e-reader.
Also, before you get bent on Linux can't do anything ... Almost all the smart phones on the market are using some type of Linux base for an OS. Android phones are almost exclusively Linux based. Yes you have a windows phone ... *Cough cough* if you like, sure the Avatar looks nice in the commercials but everyone I have known that has gotten a Windows phone, took it back within a week.
While Ipad and Iphone for Apple seem to have a nice market share, the one thing that people are finding out about Apple, now that the Android Market is in full swing is that Iphone and Ipad can only be used exclusively through "APPLE" software and you can only upgrade (if that's an option as most you will NOT be able to, period.) from Apple. No you can not buy extra RAM for your IPAD or IPHONE, you get what you get when you buy it. Otherwise you send it back to Apple and they work with it. Usually that is not an option from the people I have talked to.
Android Smartphone = I got mine with 16 GB of Phone RAM installed and then I bought and additional 32 GB MicroSDHC chip for storage, you cannot do that with Iphone. Android runs almost everything Apple will, if it doesn't run it yet, it will shortly. The app market works for Droids but if you want play on an Iphone, you have to first, unlock the phone, then you can start playing ... but "unlocking" the phone has now put your Iphone out of warranty.
So you see Mike, Linux is everywhere and unfortunately, the version or machine you bought wasn't cut out to do what you wanted, for that, I am sorry. I believe it was a poor machine that you bought Sir, not the fact that it had Linux on it. Linux has gotten over the DRM bug ... Dam those DRM bastards!!! Just what we need is more controls on our life!!! LOL

I got a Nook for Christmas and love it. I was going to buy the Kindle, a couple of friends have them, but I went for the Nook for a couple reasons. First they were available over the counter and Amazon was out of the WiFi versions until after christmas and I realized my local book shop has a portal to Google Books.
Here is my impression having a nook for just short of a month over the Kindle.
Pro
Wider format range available
I can check Ebooks out of the library
Google books has portals through my local bookstore (though there are some issues currently)
MicroSD memory card slot allows for huge increase in storage.
Con
A less battery life (due to the color touch screen), but more than a week on a charge...:)
A little heavier (not really an issue for me)

John, as I noted above, bookstores can gain access to Google Books and keep their local customers happy. I like to support my local bookstore and will use it more once the issues I've run into have been addressed (When I search for certain content through the bookstore, it isn't available like when I go straight to Google books. It seems to be all bookstores doing this as it happens at my local Eagle Harbor Books and at Powells in Portland.) I have talked to the bookstore so they can figure out what might be the issue from Google.
Regards,
Tim

I had a look and all of the books I saw on here that looked worth reading are available for free on the Guttenberg project. There are a huge # of books for free here. Look at the sites for different countries as there are different books available.
