Unlike Grant, I dont have a power upsetter, so, to me, upsetting always means lots of work and loud noises.

But on Saturday, New Years, I was working in the shop, making lots of noise and listening to Techno music with the amp turned up to 11, when I noticed a weird noise- I turned down the music, to make sure a compressed air pipe hadnt burst, and realized my whole building was vibrating.

I went outside, and the air was humming- about 100 db, maybe 40 hertz. Walked around a bit, and figured out it was coming from the refinery over on March Point, which is about 5 miles away, but there is nothing between me and it but water and open fields. They were venting from a good ten stacks huge clouds of smoke and steam, much more than normal, and the entire atmosphere was pulsing. It felt like I was right under a really big Jet plane- but no planes in the sky.

Today, I read in the paper that Tesoro had what they call an "Upset" that day. I guess if nobody is killed, its not an accident. And Thursday, Shell, next door, had one their own selves. I somehow missed that one.

Still, if that was just an Upset, I dont wanna be around if the place actually blows- I am far enough away I should be safe from flying debris, but the prevailing winds blow right towards me.

Petro-chem work is the reason I came to Seattle- to get out of the oil patch. Straddling a 36" pipe running 1000 psi at 800F (or was it vise-versa?) doing NDT was not my idea of fun. I went to the hotel one night with a skin rash and noticed my glasses were etched. Those five guys (and girls) that lost their lives in Anacortes dealt with it the hard way. Got a gas mask handy?

I think when someone is killed it's called an "incident".

but then there are others who, with the help of their art and their intelligence,
transform a yellow spot into the sun.” ~ Pablo Picasso ~

I have to say, walking through a refinery after an explosion is an eye-opening experience. Never mind the "Zero lost days due to worker injury" billboards. You want power in the form of hot, mangled metal, look no further than when a pressure vessel bursts. At Martinez, Ca. I walked around looking at all the wreckage from a blast and thought in a weird way, 'It is beautiful~' I-beams bent and blown-open steel looking like some alien flowers had sprouted through their remains. I've always wanted to capture the 'industrial accident' look ever since~

Around here, its a tough job to turn down. Regular salaries at the refineries start in the mid twenty bucks an hour.
Welders, on a turnaround, may work 6 12's, and double time on $28 base pay is a LOT of cheddar.
We have 3 refineries within 20 miles, and nobody around here pays like that.
